DUNNINGTON’S Tom Flatters has helped Queen Ethelburga’s reach three quarter-finals in a national schools basketball competition.
The 14-year-old, pictured, plays for the school’s under-15s squad as well as representing the Collegiate in the U18 and U19 teams, featuring as all three squads tasted success in the nationals.
QE now face matches against the other top seven school basketball teams in the country over the next three weeks.
“Tom is a very impressive young player and has great potential in the sport,” said Ben Kirk, QE’s director of basketball.
“He is a brilliant team player and gives it his all when he gets out onto the court. Without a doubt his performances have been a key part of QE’s success this season.”
Flatters joined the school last September after being offered a place on Queen Ethelburga’s Elite Pathway for Basketball – a special academy set up to train the next generation of regional and national players.
Other sports academies at the school include rugby, football, cricket, netball, swimming and hockey.
Two years ago the school joined the National League of Basketball with its team QE York Knights.
This season, their U18s finished second in the league, above more established teams such as Leeds Tigers, Bradford Dragons and York Eagles.
