SCHOOLS in the York area get their Drax Cup campaign under way next week when the first stages of the country’s biggest under-9s cricket competition are staged at Acomb Cricket Club.

St Paul’s, Rufforth, Poppleton Road and St Wilfrid’s will be hoping to secure a play-off place in the York West School Sports Partnership stage on Wednesday.

A second event a week later sees Archbishop of York Junior School, Westfield, Carr Junior and St Barnabas trying to qualify for the partnership final, which will also be staged at Acomb on May 14.

More than 500 schools from across Yorkshire and Teesside are registered for the 2015 Drax Cup.

Teams play in a series of events to produce four area winners from the North, South, East and West.

These teams will play the 2015 Drax Cup Finals at Headingley on Friday, July 10, before Yorkshire Vikings take on Durham Jets in the NatWest T20 Blast.

The Drax Cup is sponsored by Drax and organised by Yorkshire County Cricket Club in conjunction with the Yorkshire Cricket Board, the Yorkshire Cricket Foundation and the Yorkshire Schools’ Cricket Association.
