ROOKIE wrestlers Daisy and Isaac Donovan reached the podium in their debut outings at the Midlands Invitational in Nottingham.

Nine-year-old Daisy and her six-year-old brother Isaac, from Acomb, were the first youngsters from York Wrestling Club to take part in competition, winning a bronze medal apiece.

Daisy finished third in the under-34 kilogramme category, while her younger sibling occupied the same position in the under-26kg section at Bilborough Sports Centre.

The pair are among 30-plus members of the fledgling club, which is run by Kris Leeson and based at former world Thai boxing champion Rich Cadden’s Chokdee Academy at Poppleton Park.

Daisy and Isaac’s mother, Clare, said: “It is amazing. They have done really well.

“Daisy only started after she went along to watch her brother and now she is in there competing.

“It is a fantastic club and they just need more members.”

Cadden said: “Daisy and Isaac are two of the most dedicated junior members of the wrestling club.

“They have embraced the training really well.

“They were the first to compete, but we have got an army of other junior fighters who are almost ready for competitions.

“It is the only wrestling club in North Yorkshire, so there are very few competitions within easy travelling distance and cost is an issue.”
