JAMAAL TOKALAU scored a try-of-the-season contender but Heworth ARLC Under-11s lost 20-10 to Leeds Irish Clovers at a wet Elm Park Way.

Handling errors meant Heworth spent much of the first half on the defence, strong running from a big Clovers pack keeping them on the back foot.

After a timely half-time break, though, birthday boy Harrison Briggs darted in, Tyler Monks converting.

Then the next big Heworth play brought easily the moment of the match - as Tokalau took on the defence and raced 80 metres to score a try which might not be bettered this year.

Tokalau was the parents’ player of the match, while Theo Walton was man of the match, Oliver Grimbley top tackler and Aeron Barnett the most improved.

Siddal proved too good on the day for Heworth U10s, edging them 24-18 thanks to a try with four minutes left.

Oliver Pratt had given Heworth an early lead, the impressive Kian Ogilvie converting, but the visitors levelled and got on the front foot.

They came up against Ben Young, though, who was in the thick of the action all game, and Pratt, who made vital tackles in a man-of-the-match show, and the Villagers retook the lead against the run of play through an Ogilvie try converted by Sam Hunt, the coaches’ man of the match, Feargus Brown superbly diffused a bomb close to his own line but the visitors’ pressure told as they levelled on half-time after some excellent passing.

Heworth’s Oliver Lambert made some strong runs in his best game this season, but Siddal took the lead and, although Ogilvie hit back, Pratt goaling, Siddal got the winner.

Heworth U9s paid for an error-ridden first half in bad conditions as their winning run was ended by Upton.

After going behind, Heworth struck back through Harrison Barker and Adam Hodgson but Upton retook the lead, only fine tackling by men-of-the-match Keigan Cumberland and Toby Driscoll keeping the score down.

Heworth rallied with long-range efforts by the impressive Zachary Towse and Leon Jones but it wasn’t enough.

Heworth U8s impressed again in tough weather conditions at Kellingley.

Going in level at the break, the Villagers kept the hosts scoreless in the second half with outstanding defence led by top tackler Thomas Hardy, who also bagged two tries.

Kenzie Witty, the game’s man of the steel, and Freddie Wilson, the parents’ man of the match, notched hat-tricks, while other scorers were Soren Tait, Johnathan Hartley, who was named the opposition’s man of the match, and Dan Clarke, who was most improved alongside Jack Thompson.

Zane Mason, Theo Edson, Jay Downs, Ellis Beard, Ellis Southerington and Evan Oglive starred as Heworth U7s, despite cold, wet weather, gave another fine display in their latest outing.
