HEWORTH ARLC Under-12s are hoping to kick on after being re-categorised into division two of the Yorkshire Junior League.

The Villagers took on highly-rated title hopefuls East Leeds last time out, suffering a third defeat this term in three outings against leading division one clubs.

The team played below their best but there were still impressive performances, notably from Callum Rutland, who was named man of the match for his non-stop effort and tackling, playing in three different positions during the game, and players’ player of the match Will Spencer, who ran hard at prop and suffered a broken nose for his troubles.

Newcomers AJ Towse and Bradley Ward also both showed promise.

A late try sealed Heworth U11s’ fate as they lost a ding-dong game at Methley Warriors.

Early handling errors meant the Villagers spent most of the first half on the back foot.

However, they got off the mark through winger Theo Walton, with the try converted by Tyler Monks.

More good defending from Heworth kept the game alive and they broke through again after quick thinking from loose-forward Luke Dorking, who took advantage of an offside defence to score, Monks goaling again.

Walton then got his second before the late effort from the hosts.

Theo Innes was the most improved, birthday boy Tom Clarke the parents’ man of the match, James Leach the top tackler and Finlay Tait the man of the match.

Stanningley’s off-load game proved too good for Heworth U10s as the home team won 42-26 despite the Villagers’ spirited second-half performance. Henry Grice-Holt had a superb all-round game and was voted the parents’ man of the match as well as most improved.

Oliver Pratt caused problems whenever he ran with the ball – and added four tries to his growing haul this season to win the coaches’ award.

Kian Ogilvie was the opposition’s choice of man of match as his running game created danger throughout.

Lucas Burden also crossed the whitewash and shone as top tackler. Conversions were added by Clarke, Pratt and Ogilvie.

Heworth U9s, buoyed by last week’s emphatic win, were dominant at Wetherby Bulldogs.

Heworth opened the scoring through the opposition’s choice of man of the match, Leon Jones, and never looked back, with further tries coming from most improved player Ryan Jones and the impressive Zachary Towse.

The second half brought more of the same with men of the match Adam Hodgson and Ellis Cochrane completing hat-tricks before Toby Driscoll powered over.

Heworth U8s ran two teams for the first time last weekend.

One team took on Ovenden, who gave the Villagers a run for their money before top tackler Kenzie Witty scored to see off the stubborn opposition.

The strong running Johnathon Hartley took the man of steel award with Freddie Wilson voted both parents’ and opposition man of the match.

In game two, Greetland caused a few problems for the up-and- coming young Villagers.

Ben Taylor led from the front for Heworth with strong defence, well supported by man of steel Kai Gatenby. Jayden Tokolau took the opposition’s accolade, and Jamie Hickley in only his fourth game, collected the parents’ award.
