TABLE TENNIS tyro Alexander Robinson is to feast at the national table.

The ten-year-old Wigginton School pupil has advanced to the national table-tennis finals after sweeping to victory in the York under-11s tournament.

Robinson stormed through the county championships held at St John Fisher School, in Harrogate, to earn a place as one of the leading eight players in the country to battle for All-England honours at Tipton in the Midlands on April 25.

It is a meteoric rise for the youngster, who only took up table-tennis less than three years ago when he went along to a session at which his elder brother Ben was playing.

Explained his mum Sue: “One of the coaches there thought Alexander was bored so suggested he might want to have pick up a bat. He had a go and that was it.”

Alexander was quickly recruited to the Yorkshire Development squad in which he still remains, but the qualification to the nationals is another step-up.

At the national summit in Tipton, titles will be determined for age groups running from under-11s up to U19s, with some of the latter age group having competed in last year’s Commonwealth Games.

Wigginton wonder Alexander will be up against the seven other U11 regional champions.
