BREEZY conditions blew the cobwebs away as Wilberfoss secured a 2-0 win over Ripon in the City of York Girls’ Football League’s under-15 nine-a-side league.

The hosts made the most of the wind advantage and went close through midfielder Alex Harvey and Emma Nelson before the deadlock was broken in the 15th minute.

An excellent one-two between player of the match Olivia Cant and Jess Wills resulted in Syd Greening firing home from close range.

Although they were dominating most of the play, the hosts still needed to be alert and Poppy Clancey defended well to foil the danger poised by a Ripon winger.

Back came Foss and a clearance from keeper Georgia Stanton found Greening, who ran to confidently slot the ball past the advancing keeper for her 12th goal of the season.

Just before the end of the half, Foss right back Alice Ella was called on to close down a dangerous Ripon attack.

After an early dangerous cross by Jess Alston, most of the remainder of the second half saw Wilberfoss having to defend, typified by goalkeeper Georgia Stanton superbly forcing a fierce shot over the crossbar.
