TOCKWITH lead the way in the York FA Under-19s Football League - but second best will be good enough in the village side's debut campaign.

A 4-0 home win over Wigginton Grasshoppers kept Tockwith on top of the table, but Dringhouses remain one point behind with two games in hand.

Tockwith manager Alan Purves is delighted with the way his squad have handled the switch from the Harrogate League, but believes Dringhouses are almost unstoppable.

Houses are the only side to have got the better of Tockwith this season, but they needed a late comeback from 2-0 down and a last-minute penalty winner to seal a 3-2 victory.

The sides meet in the reverse fixture on Sunday, February 8, and Purves said: "Dringhouses are the strongest side.

"We've got to play them again but, even if we win that game, I'm not sure anyone else will take points off them.

"If we finish second in the league that will be a good achievement. We are a small club and a small village, so it's been a great season."

Tockwith played in Harrogate League's U17s competition, so the step up to U19s was an unknown for Purves.

He said: "It is an interesting league. It is not what I expected. As a club and a team, we have grown up in the York League, but after U16s we didn't want to go straight to U19s, so we had a year in the Harrogate League.

"Coming back to U19s, there are two leagues within one. The top five or so teams are quite close and then there is a gap to the rest. There some really heavy scores."

Prolific goalscorer Jack Swindlehurst netted a hat-trick in Tockwith's 4-0 Wigginton win, taking his tally for the season to near the 30 mark.

Ben Blackwood was the other marksman.

Unbeaten Dringhouses kept up the pressure with a 5-0 success at fourth-placed Haxby Town.

Tom Hawksby got two to add to goals from Sam Ripley-Kitson, Cam Mulhearn and Liam Robertson.

Fulford went down 6-2 at home to York RI , whose scorers were Ben Coates, Mick Long, Jack Willis, Tom Brooks, Dan Hickey and Judah Cocker.

Jack Davies bagged two for Fulford.

York Cubs got back to winning ways with a 7-2 triumph at Stillington, thanks to a hat-trick from Ed Chapman, plus two goals apiece from Aiden Burton and Will Edmond.

Matt Malkin and Dan Pickering netted for the home team.

Thorpe United beat visitors Wilberfoss 8-3 as Tommy Butterfield ran riot, scoring five goals, with Jordan Leybourn, Andy Wilson and Liam Lawton completing the tally.

Joe Dyrdal, Dan Tunnicliffe and Richard Tinson responded for Foss.
