COREY LITTLEFIELD bagged a brace and Dan McCarthy also netted as Thorpe United Under-16s triumphed 3-1 at Wakefield Jets to go top of division one in the Garforth Junior Football League.
Thorpe made an early breakthrough when, following a move started by Haydn Brown, defender Tim Heaton played Littlefield in and he scored with a deft chip.
With the outstanding Dominik Stankiwicz’s tackling keeping the Jets at bay, good counter attacking from Thorpe also saw Shaun Heselwood force a good save after being released by Jordan Emery. In the second half, Thorpe keeper Alex Ward was left a spectator as the home side struck a post with a good shot. But Thorpe went close again when James Arnold played in Bailey Smirthwaite and, after his shot was beaten out, Heselwood’s follow-up effort was blocked.
Matthew Webster went on to feed man-of-the-match Heselwood who picked out McCarthy with a well-placed pass and the winger outpaced his markers before cutting inside and producing a fine finish to double the visitors’ advantage.
Wakefield pulled a goal back with a well-taken effort that gave Ward no chance.
But victory was made certain after Arnold intercepted a wayward pass and released the overlapping Ben Clowes.
His pin-point pass then gave Littlefield the opportunity to slot home his second.
