BRAVE York Schoolboy Under-11s bowed out in the semi-finals of the nine-a-side Yorkshire Cup in Leeds.

The unbeaten Minster city boys topped their group after games against Sheffield ‘B’ (0-0), Derby (1-1), Leeds (2-0) and East Riding (3-1), before going down 2-0 to Sheffield ‘A’ in the last four.

York started their campaign with a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Sheffield ‘B’, followed by another draw against Derby, sealed by a long-range effort by Harry Tinker.

Desperately needing a win against Leeds, they delivered a 2-0 victory with goals from defender Will Hollings, who was having a superb tournament, and Elliot Heath.

York’s final group game against East Riding ended in a comprehensive 3-0 victory with goals from Hollings, Joe Stamp and Daniel Myers.

As group winners, York were pitched against Sheffield ‘A’ in the semi-finals, where the heavy conditions took their toll.

Oliver Kilvington, Tinker and Jack Hughes turned in strong performances for York.
