YOUTH pedal power was amply demonstrated by Clifton Cycling Club’s teenage prospect Rob Gray, writes Tony Kelly.

The student at All Saints School Sixth-Form College showed scores of seniors how to scale the heights in the Peak District.

Gray won the junior class in the Monsal Hill climbing competition, besting the rest of his fellow teenaged peers by a clear four seconds.

And in doing so, he was also seventh home in the elite class, which included senior pro cyclists among which were some who had competed in this year’s Tour de France.

The 16-year-old’s Hill-topping show in Derbyshire continued an impressive year in which he was a regular winner in National Youth League races at the new track at York Sports Village and also competed at a youth event in London, where he finished in front of crowds lining The Mall.

This will be Gray’s last year competing as a youth. From 2015 he will be in national cycling’s junior class, where he hopes to make just as impressive an impact.
