New Earswick Indoor Bowls Club’s three-match unbeaten run came to a halt when they were surprisingly beaten 68-65 by second from bottom North Cave Yellow in the Yorkshire Over-55s League second division.

The away rinks did the business with both of them winning in style.

The team led by Terry Shepherdson came from 8-2 down after eight ends to lead 19-9.

In the last end they dropped a four, while Mick Head’s team were 12-5 down after ten ends before winning eight of the next ten to take a 21-15 lead going into the last where they dropped a single.

But there was disappointment at home.

Barry Johnson’s side gave themselves too much to do when they fell 17-3 behind with only five ends to go.

They made a good attempt by winning them all to only go down 17-15.

Ralph Tiplady’s team got themselves back into their game with a three, then a two, on the 13th and 14th ends to pull back to 12-9.

But then they let the game slip away again as they lost all but one of the remaining ends to lose 22-10.

New Earswick, who will finish fourth in the league, play their last game against York ‘B’ next Tuesday, with a 12.30pm start.

Meanwhile, New Earswick completed their North Eastern Ladies League season with an 84-66 defeat to Hornsea who leapfrogged them to finish as runners up to runaway champions Selby.

Kath Sykes’ team found themselves 15-13 down after 15 ends before winning four of the last six, scoring a brace of twos on the last two ends to win 22-17.

Marjorie Watson’s side got off to a good start where they led 15-4 after nine ends though their opponents came back well.

Hornsea went into the last end 20-17 down only for a single to the home side to bring a 21-17 New Earswick victory.

Away, Annette Prosser’s team were level at 4-4 but then could only pick up two more singles before the 17th end and trailed 23-6.

They won three of the last four ends, but it was too late as they eventually lost 24-12.

Peggy Walker’s team were in with a chance when the score stood at 13-10 to the home side after 14 ends. But then four bad ends put paid to opportunity and they eventually went down 25-12.

New Earswick missed out on second place by a shots difference of five after they and Hornsea both finished on 30 points.
