Tennis: York match the champions as IT Sports League kicks into gear

York opened up with a big win against a new-look promoted Dunnington 2 in division one of the IT Sports York Mixed Doubles Tennis League.

Andrew Cooke and Louise Marshman led the way, just out-scoring 30-game winners Angus Smith and Wendy Stirke.

Reigning champions Dunnington 1 served notice of keeping hold of their title with a comfortable win against Wetherby Castlegarth as captain Katie Milne and partner Dave Walton dropped only seven games.

Fulford 1’s youthful team won all nine rubbers against a useful York 2.

The opening match in division two paired up relegated Fulford at home to newly-promoted Stamford Bridge, with the experienced Fulford team taking the points.

The other promoted side, Bishopthorpe, beat Copmanthorpe with Jonny Kay and Milly Pratt unbeaten.

Rufforth’s Andy Ivel and Catherine Baker won all three rubbers to help their side beat Bubwith.

David Lloyd continued their quest for promotion from the bottom tier in consecutive seasons with an impressive win against Rowntree Park in division three.

Fulford’s Tom Craddock and Eleanor Crooks proved too good for visitors Sutton-on-Derwent.

David Lloyd duo Paul Chappell and Lucy Crowther starred in a win over Cawood in division five. They were well supported by the unbeaten Alistair Heath and Jenny Walker.

Stillington won a thriller against visitors York, led by Ken Stirk and Katy Fowler.

Promoted Bishopthorpe started with a win against Appleton Roebuck in division six with James Field and Julia Sykes unbeaten.

John Latham and Gerry Screeton were unbeaten for Wilberfoss as they beat visitors Cawood.

The top scorers were in division eight as Copmanthorpe’s Rob Abbott and Claire Fuller matched Andy and Lynda Withers with 32 games apiece in a win against Fulford.

Robert Parry and Ed Hope were Tollerton’s top scorers in a tight match against Wigginton.

In division 11, Dunnington just lost out to Rufforth and Appleton Roebuck beat Bishopthorpe.
