Tennis quartet win places at German games
10:14am Wednesday 21st December 2011 in Tennis
A QUARTET of tennis players from York have been selected to compete in next year’s Special Olympics Germany Eighth National Games.
Special Olympics City of York are sending Matthew Wrigglesworth, Laura Campbell, Cameron Long and Emma Lindsay to the games, which will be held in Munich from May 20 to 26.
Special Olympics Great Britain were invited to nominate a tennis and tenpin bowling team – and the York tennis squad got the thumbs up.
Hosts Special Olympics Germany are covering all the costs for accommodation and meals for the squad and coach Bev Cairns. The athletes will only be expected to fund their air fare between the UK and Munich.
City of York Special Olympics chairman Paul Ramskill said: “It is an honour for our tennis players to be invited to compete in such a prestigious event.
“We know they will do the City of York proud.
“This is the first of a number of national and international events we hope to send athletes to over the next two years and our committee will provide financial assistance.”
Anyone interested in sponsoring individual athletes or the team should phone Paul on 07767 318030.
