THE City of York Tennis Tournament is poised to make a return in 2012 after four blank years.
The competition was first played in the 1920s and was a leading event in the city until dwindling entries forced it to be mothballed after the 2007 staging.
Bob Shread, head of tennis at St Peter’s School, had been keen to revive it in 2011 but the baton has now been taken up by former singles winner Phil Langley.
2004 champion Langley, who plays in local leagues for York Tennis Club, is aiming to stage the event at Rowntree Park in the first or second week of June next year.
The plan is to have the following categories – men’s singles, women’s singles, mixed doubles, men’s doubles and women’s doubles.
Langley said: “I wanted to get involved and get the tournament started up again because it was very popular for many years.”
Langley is appealing for anyone interested in joining an organising committee, or in helping out, to phone him on 07787 989299.
