PETER Moor, York’s finest tennis player in the 1960s and a former semi-professional footballer, has died in Meadowbeck Care Home, Osbaldwick, after a long illness. He was 76.
Moor, who suffered a severe stroke two years ago which left him paralysed in the left arm and leg, was one of the fittest players to grace the York sporting scene and it was this that helped him to become such an outstanding sportsman.
He was a member of Tang Hall Tennis Club and later York Lawn Tennis Club at Clifton Park.
He won the Yorkshire Evening Press trophy for the York Municipal Tournament men’s singles in Rowntree Park for three successive years from 1961 to 1963 in addition to the men’s doubles crown with Geoff Atkinson in 1961 and 1966.
Moor was a member of the York LTC men’s first team in the Yorkshire League and the mixed team in the York and District League.
A hard-working left-sided footballer, he played for several clubs on the North Yorkshire circuit.
Besides starring for York City Reserves, he also played for Selby Town, Goole Town, Bridlington and Harrogate Town.
Born in York, Moor was educated at Nunthorpe Grammar School before leaving to do an engineering apprenticeship at Armstrong Patents.
After National Service in the RAF, he joined British Telecom as a draughtsman and remained with BT for the rest of his working life.
He leaves his wife, Beryl, to whom he was married for 47 years, daughters Susan and Julie and three grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held at York Crematorium on Thursday, November 17 at 11am.
