Wigginton Tennis Club will celebrate their 30th anniversary with pride next season after being awarded the Lawn Tennis Association’s ClubMark accreditation.
Claire Smith, the LTA tennis development officer for North Yorkshire, made the award at a special presentation at Wigginton.
The LTA awards ClubMark accreditation only to those clubs which meet the governing body’s standards for quality of coaching, safety, child protection, good club management, sustainability and provision of opportunities for all.
Wigginton join a select group of only five other clubs in and around York to have been handed the accolade.
Tony Howat, chairman, said: “We are delighted to receive the ClubMark.
“It’s a reward for all the hard work of the club committee, the dedication of our coaching staff, including Ben Walker and Andy Crockett, and the enthusiasm for tennis of all our members, who also play their part in making Wigginton a top-notch club.”
Wigginton cater for 80 youngsters and 90 adult members. As well as having a junior team, Wigginton field four mens’ teams, six mixed sides and a women’s team in York’s various leagues.
The club boasts four carpet courts, two of which have recently been relaid and are floodlit.
Howat added: “We already work with the local community, schools and parents to help promote tennis, and also boost the club by providing the champions of the future.”
