APPLETON Roebuck prevailed in the three-way fight for the division three title in the Tyke Petroleum Men’s Tennis League.
Roebuck won their last match at Civil Service to take the trophy ahead of York 2 and a resurgent Knaresborough.
York 2 and Knaresborough each have one match left to try to claim the second promotion place. Silverware is also heading to Heworth, who wrapped up the division six crown with a 58-50 victory against York 4, for whom Stu Langley and John Linfoot won 25 games. In division two, Wigginton put themselves in the driving seat with a hard-fought 62-46 home defeat of Copmanthorpe.
Ben Storey and Ben Walker won 28 games for Wigginton, who are destined for the top-flight next season. Pocklington are the only side who can deny them the title.
Safety-seeking Dunnington 2 were on the receiving end of a 74-34 beating from division four champions Sherburn.
There was more bad news for Dunnington when fellow strugglers Starbeck 2 gained a 71-0 walkover over Alne & Tollerton.
Bishopthorpe mounted a late charge at Rowntree Park 2, but an 11-1 final rubber win by captain James Parker and Sam Watson was just not enough as the division five leaders held on to win 55-53. Harlow’s 74-34 win at Boston Spa 3 sealed promotion with three division seven games yet to play. Riccall look good for the second promotion place after a 78-30 demolition of Pocklington 2. A remarkable 23-game debut by Sean Bishop, partnering Garry Cammidge, helped Stamford Bridge 2 to a 63-45 win over Wheldrake 2.
