NEWCOMERS Boston Spa 3 are celebrating their first-ever victory in division seven of the Tyke Petroleum Men’s Tennis League.

After several narrow defeats, they finally won 58-50 at home to Wheldrake 2. The win leaves them 14 points behind leaders Harlow, who have a match in hand.

Despite their three-point cushion at the top, Poppleton 1 refused to do their own second team any favours in division one.

They won all nine rubbers in their inter-club clash, with Mike Binns and Paul Cook logging the day’s top score of 32 games in an 81-27 drubbing. A rejuvenated York kept up the chase at the top after edging a 61-47 win at home to David Lloyd, despite a late rally from their visitors. Paul Whurr and Ollie Gardner proved an invaluable partnership with 23 games for York.

Dunnington saw off Rowntree Park as they were unbeaten in every rubber for a 76-32 return.

Fulford celebrated the return of Govind Baker with a 64-44 win at home to Bubwith. Baker and Sean Evans top-scored with 25 games for Fulford.

Title contenders Castlegarth were given both barrels in a division two promotion shoot-out at Pocklington. Ed Barker-Wyatt and Pete Thomson-Grove were bang on target as they top-scored with 31 games for Pock.

Darren Nicholson-Smith and Tony Britton were not far behind with 28 for the home side as they rolled out 75-33 winners.

Pocklington are now clear in second with a game in hand over leaders Boston Spa, who were run close before winning at home to bottom side Strensall. York 2’s John Logan and Paul Josse were unbeaten at Appleton Roebuck, scoring 23 – nearly half their side’s total in the top-of-the-table clash in division three.

An 11-1 win by Roebuck’s Adrian Shakeshaft and Ed Ziegler gave the home side the momentum to edge a 60-48 win and take a four-point lead at the top. A 68-40 away defeat of Rufforth by on-song Knaresborough saw them join the hunt for promotion back to division two. Division four leaders Wilberfoss were beaten by second-placed Sherburn, who had Phil Bremner and Jonathan Sharp winning 32 games.

Fulford 2 trounced Alne & Tollerton to take third place as Cawood stumbled at Starbeck 2.

Division five is still close as the top three all won again.

Bishopthorpe edged a tight match away to Sutton-on-Derwent 2 to create a gap, while second-placed Wigginton 2 won all nine rubbers at pointless Civil Service 2, and Rowntree Park 2 beat Sheriff Hutton to stay third.

In division six, York 3 won 62-46 against York 4.

Heworth maintained their 100 per cent record with a 62-46 win at Wheldrake.
