WIGGINTON 3 claimed the last promotion place in the climax to the Tyke Petroleum Men’s Tennis League after a tremendous division six scrap at Knaresborough 2.

Neil Storey and Nick O’Keeffe’s proved the Wigginton match-winners with a second round 8-4 success.

That was the sole rubber to be won by more than one game, in a fiercely contested 55-53 success.

To ensure victory, captain Rob Walker bravely hobbled through the whole match despite tearing a hamstring in the first round.

Wigginton leapt above Sutton-on-Derwent 2 to confirm their ascent to division five next summer.

The Tyke Petroleum movers and shakers this season were:

Division one: Champions Rowntree Park for the first time in their history; relegated are Wetherby to division three, Copmanthorpe to division two and Fulford, who will play in the division vacated by the level two play-off winners.

Level two: Division two and three champions Dunnington and Knaresborough promoted automatically to the top flight; runners-up Starbeck 1 will host Bubwith in the play-off to replace Fulford in division one; relegated to level three are Boston Spa and Pocklington, who will play in division four next year, and David Lloyd 2 and Starbeck 2 who go down to division five.

Level three: division four champions Harrogate Racquets will join division five runners-up Wetherby 2 in division two next year; division five champions Sherburn are elevated to division three along with The Academy; six teams from the two divisions are relegated to level four; Poppleton 3 and Boston Spa 2 will start in division six next year; Cliffe will join near neighbours Riccall in division seven; Alne & Tollerton go to division eight.

Level four: six teams are promoted; division six champions Appleton Roebuck 2 join Bubwith 2 and York 4 in division four next season; division seven champions Cawood go to division five along with division eight champs Copmanthorpe 2 and Wigginton 3.

There are no relegations from level four. Instead, the 18 teams missing out on promotion, will be side-swapped, ensuring no-one next year plays more than one of the teams that they played this year.

Trophies to all the divisional winners will be presented at the league’s presentation evening and annual general meeting at Dunnington Sports Club on Thursday, November 6, starting at 7.30pm.

Derek Boorman, who has been the league’s sponsor since its inception 35 years ago, will make the presentations.
