POPPLETON 1 were handed the division one trophy at the IT Sports York Mixed Tennis League annual presentation evening at York Tennis Club.

League president Malcolm Huntington, a former Press sports editor, presented the trophies to the ten divisional winners.

Poppleton were clear winners of the top division and were crowned champions for the second year running, winning more than 1,000 games over the season.

Their leading players were brother and sister Nick and Bex Turnbull, who averaged 9.4 games per rubber.

New Earswick 2 won promotion to division nine after an outstanding season in which they won all their matches, totalling a mammoth 1,118 games with an average of 80 games per match.

Their leading pair Keith Pearson and Nicky Georgiou averaged ten games per rubber over the season, with team-mates Brian Hudson and Yvonne Petruso close behind with 9.8.

Appleton Roebuck also had a great season, with their first and second teams both winning divisional trophies.

The league's annual general meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 4, 2015. The venue has yet to be confirmed.
