Triumphant York 1 celebrated retaining the division 1 title at the Fulford Ladies Invitation Tennis League end of season presentation; which saw trophies awarded to the winners of each of the six divisions.

The Clifton Park club held off a late challenge from runners up Dunnington to finish 2 points clear at the top and so enabled outgoing captain, Karen Retief, to steer the team to their third title under her tenure.

The 2014 champions also boasted the highest number of games won in the league with 1078.

Fulford 1 ensured a swift return to the top tier by claiming the division 2 crown, losing only one match to second placed Starbeck who will join them in division 1 next season.

The closest finish was in division 3 where the top two couldn’t be separated on points. Ultimately it was Rufforth that claimed their second successive title, edging ahead of Appleton Roebuck by just 20 games.

Popp 2 took the division 4 title finishing one point clear of second placed Riccall, so bounce straight back up after being relegated from division 3 last year. Division 5 saw New Earswick as table toppers, ending up 5 points ahead of runners up Cawood.

The only undefeated team in the league were division 6 champions, Bubwith. Their 100% record saw them hold an 8 point margin, the largest in the league, over fellow promoted team Wig 2.

The presentation evening also recognised the top scoring player in each division.

York 1’s Sasha Taylor bagged 311 games, the most in the top flight, whilst division 2’s ever present Fulford 1 captain, Jill McCreedy, amassed 388.

In division 3 Appleton’s Judy Marriott just pipped team mate Emma Cashmore to be top gun with 334 and division 4 saw Fulford 3’s Janette Richardson claim 295 games to take the honours.

Cawood’s Lorainne Bishop was top performer in division 5 bagging 259 games over the season.

Highest scorer in division 6 was Michelle Helm from Wilberfoss with a return of 389 games. This resulted in her winning a new award, the Terry Haw Trophy, given to the player that wins the most games in the league overall.
