THE race for the second promotion spot in division two of the IT Sports Mixed Tennis League is going down to the wire.

Wetherby Castlegarth captured the division two title weeks ago and ended their campaign with a win over Bubwith. Top scorers Angela Crossley and Tim Purdy helped to relegate Bubwith, unlucky to go down having won five matches.

Four sides are still bidding for promotion, with Fulford now in second place with a games difference advantage of one over Poppleton.

Fulford lost the chance to clinch the runners-up spot after going down to promotion rivals Rowntree Park, but ended with a good win thanks to unbeaten Faye Garland and Tom Craddock.

York have won their last two matches to stay in the promotion hunt as unbeaten Howard Pallister partnered Tricia Urquhart in a victory over Rowntree Park and then Margaret Whitehead in a triumph at Poppleton.

Sutton-on-Derwent’s rearranged matches will decide whether they are promoted in division three after Cliffe lost their final match at Stillington, who were boosted by the unbeaten father and daughter team of Rozzy Carrick and Tim Madgwick.

Bishopthorpe grabbed the chance to move into second as Ellie Page and Jamie Winspear won 29 games against Fulford. Fulford will be relegated with Copmanthorpe, who lost to a Dunnington side which had Rosie Todd and Greg Ashcroft winning 31 games.

York are champions of division five after Katie Shorthouse and Dave Howarth led the scoring against second-placed Riccall.

Lorraine Bishop and David Welsh spearheaded a good win by Cawood to save themselves from the drop but relegate Poppleton.

Bishopthorpe could find no answer to the 26 games won by Wetherby’s Helen and Stuart Robinson, but they are in third place, ahead of Castlegarth on games difference.

Appleton Roebuck are the new division six leaders after beating Stamford Bridge, with Emma Robertshaw and David Luscombe winning 27 games.

Bishopthorpe 3 have to win their remaining two matches to take the division nine trophy after closest rivals Heworth beat Cliffe with the aid of captain Helen Walker and Mike Boothman.

Jackie Mason and Robert Field won 28 games at Fulford to keep Bishopthorpe in top spot.

New Earswick’s Nicky Georgiou and Keith Pearson won 36 games at Sutton-on-Derwent in division ten.

Liz Walker and Neil Pratt ensured Wilberfoss 3 would be promoted by winning 27 games at Dunnington.
