THE Fulford Ladies Invitation Tennis League season gets under way this weekend, with six divisions of eight teams taking part.

Only two teams - York 1 and Pocklington 1 - managed to score maximum points last season in the Paul Garland Ltd-sponsored competition.

York 1 lifted the division 1 title comfortably, while Pocklington 1 earned promotion to the top flight.

The league’s top games scorers were Starbeck, who won the division three title.

Rufforth and Cliffe just edged out Sutton-on-Derwent to move up to division three, while David Lloyd 2 and Knaresborough 2 convincingly earned promotion to divison four.

A tight finish in division six saw Bishopthorpe 3 and Stamford Bridge hold off the challenge of Wilberfoss to take their places in division five, but Bish have since had to withdraw from the league.

The popular IT Sports tournament will resume this year and be run by Bishopthorpe Tennis Club on September 6, while Poppleton will again host the Beryl Bean Tournament later that month.
