UNSTOPPABLE York 1 celebrated their storming division one title success at the Fulford Ladies Invitation Tennis League’s end-of-season presentation.

The championship and runners-up trophies were handed out across all six divisions, with the leading individual players in each division also earning recognition.

York 1 cruised to the top-flight title, winning all 14 of their games to amass 28 points – winning 1,048 games, to finish ten points clear of runners-up Poppleton 1.

Division two winners Pocklington 1 enjoyed a wider margin of victory in their championship race, finishing 11 points ahead of Boston Spa 1 after winning 12 and drawing two of their 14 fixtures.

Starbeck lost only one match en route to the division three honours, while Rufforth pipped Cliffe to the division four gong by only two points.

There was a similar gap between division five winners David Lloyd 2 and runners-up Knaresborough 2.

The closest of the six divisions was the division six battle between Bishopthorpe 3 and Stamford Bridge, with Bish edging to the title, only on games difference.

York 1’s Wendy Stirke won the most games in the top flight, claiming 398 over the course of the season, while division two’s top gun was Lorraine Pearey, of Boston Spa 1, with 286.

Division three’s top performer was Starbeck’s Helen Halsall with 310, while Cliffe’s Jane Pemberton took the honours in division four with 342 games won.

In division five, New Earswick’s Yvonne Petruso shone with 292 wins, while there was a return of 313 games from Stamford Bridge’s Kim Lees in division six.
