The Tyke Petroleum Men’s Tennis League has brand new champions as David Lloyd triumphed in their final match at former champions Dunnington to claim their first title since joining 11 years ago, writes Ian Hillman.

Said captain Andy Holmes: “It’s been a fantastic journey.

“Some of the original team from 2003 when we were named Next Generation are still playing.”

Besides Holmes, Richard Tasker, Nick Pears and Duncan Bradshaw are from that original line-up. Contenders Poppleton and Rowntree Park each needed a big score to topple David Lloyd.

They fought out a nail-biter with Popp narrowly taking the honours 55-53, but for only 6½ points.

Park’s unbeatable James Denmark and Sam Davies thwarted Poppleton’s hopes of retaining their title with 3-25.

Silverware beckoned also for third-placed David Lloyd 2 as they fought out their half of the final day’s double-header.

Just three points behind the leaders, they got the big score needed at home to bottom team Dunnington 2 to win the trophy.

They bagged a 12-0 clean sweep with captain Chris Johnson and Paul Gowland top-scoring with 3-27.

Fulford 2 visited second-placed Boston Spa 2. Fulford won six rubbers, four of them 7-5 and the 9½ points gained secured them the division five trophy by just a half-point from David Lloyd 2.

Dave Atkinson and Jack Wood were the day’s top-guns as Copmanthorpe claimed their biggest win of the season, 93-15 at home to relegated Wilberfoss. That win enabled them to finally claim the division two crown.

Cop have led from week two this season, and their dominance sends a clear signal that they’re ready to return to the top-flight after a seven-year absence. Rufforth thwarted Harlow’s hopes of an early celebration, taking four points off the unbeaten division four leaders. Chasers Starbeck 2 confirmed promotion after dropping just three points in their last two matches.

’Beck still have an outside chance of the trophy, and play out a title decider at home to Harlow in their last match.

Stamford Bridge 2 narrowly pipped Cliffe to the division six title after a 12-0 demolition of fourth-placed Sheriff Hutton. Mattie Taylor and James Hunt kept their momentum to return 3-29.

Wetherby Castlegarth 2 secured the division eight title with a record-breaking 140 points, after thrashing Wigginton 4 83-25 at Strensall.
