DAVID Lloyd completed the double over 2012 champions Poppleton to move one step away from their first Tyke Petroleum Men’s Tennis League title.

In a tooth-and-nail contest on Lloyd’s indoor carpet, Popp captain Nick Turnbull and youngster Jack Hannah scrapped to three points and 22 games.

Their team staged a final round rally, only to lose out 8-4 (58-50).

Lloyd now need 5½ points from their final match at strugglers Dunnington to clinch the title.

Sean Evans retired unbeaten after two rubbers for Fulford at Rowntree Park, scoring his team’s only points with Govind Baker.

Park took full advantage and are pressing Poppleton for the runners-up spot. Top scorers Ben Walker and Phil Langley notched 32 games as Wigginton beat relegated Pocklington.

York 1 have been promoted from division three after taking 11 points at home to Rowntree Park 2. Olly Gardner and Steve Smith were on top form with 3-28.

York have led the table from the second week, losing only once. Boston Spa 2 head a turbulent division five after dropping only half a point at Strensall.

Matt Lewis and captain Jordan Gregory fired 3-29. David Lloyd 2 survived a late comeback to win 57-51 at Heworth to stay second.

Chris Johnson and Paul Gowland were unbeatable for Lloyd with 2-19. Better late than never for Bishopthorpe 2, who claimed their first win by 65-43 at Dunnington 2.

Youngster Stan Brown and captain Kelvin Riches took 2½ points from 23 games won.

Cliffe and Stamford Bridge 2 both confirmed their elevation while their race for the division six trophy continues.

Bridge have a two-point advantage after their 12-point mauling of hosts Pocklington 2. Chasers Cliffe settled for 11 points at home to Selby.

The twin-villagers claimed the match bonus 59-49, thanks to 27 games from Dave and Matt Pearson, for a 6½-5½ result.

Wetherby 2 look odds on to win division eight after stretching their lead to 13 points, with an impressive 10½ return at York 4.
