Rufforth have secured the second promotion place in division two of the IT Sports Mixed Tennis League by winning their final match.

Unbeaten James Edmond and Christine Place led Rufforth home against York with good support from Andy Ivel and Judith Evans.

Champions David Lloyd ended their fine season winning at Poppleton to dash the hosts’ promotion hopes.

The second relegation spot is still undecided as Rowntree Park have come with a late winning run against Poppleton and Bishopthorpe.

Poppleton ended their division one season with a final victory at Fulford to finish as one of only three teams unbeaten all year.

Division three promotion and relegation is far from decided after Stillington, who are in the relegation frame, ended leaders Stamford Bridge’s unbeaten run with a fine team performance.

Second-placed Fulford went down to Dunnington and now must wait for the outstanding matches to be played to see if they will be promoted.

Chris Burnham and Sarah Blacker took 28 games to lead Wigginton to a win against main promotion rivals Copmanthorpe.

Cliffe beat Riccall by two games to relegate their opposition and maintain their promotion hopes in division four.

Cliffe’s final match is against Appleton Roebuck who have the same number of points.

Appleton won a close match against Wilberfoss until injury in the second round to Bev Tebbutt forced them to have to concede games.

Wigginton are another team who know that they have to win their final match to snatch the second promotion place in division five after they beat leaders Fulford.

Bishopthorpe finished with a strong win against Castlegarth led by Jamie Winspear and Ellie Page, and are on the same points as Wigginton.

Cawood took two vital points in their relegation struggle with a win against York. Their brace of matches against Alne will clarify who will suffer the drop.

Just two points separate the bottom five teams in division six.

A three-match winning run against Sutton-on-Derwent 3 and twice against Dunnington run has not saved Tollerton as their relegation rivals also came up with the points.

Sutton 3 saved their division status with a battling win against promoted Poppleton, Wilberfoss ended champion Sutton 2’s unbeaten run and Appleton Roebuck took the points against visitors Stillington.

Rufforth have won the division eight title with a win against Stamford Bridge who will be promoted with them.

Unbeaten Charlie Dixon and Kate Lewis led the way for Rufforth after Paul Yoward and Wendy Farnell had ensured a win two days earlier against Wigginton. Despite a good final win against Tollerton, Fulford will be relegated on games difference.

Rufforth are looking for yet another title to end a fine season as they close in on promotion from division ten.

Ian Frame and Claire Hildreth led Rufforth to the win against Sutton-on-Derwent with Hildreth then partnering Dan Russell to a 10-2 final rubber success against Dunnington to move into second place.

Cliffe snatched the division 11 title with a final match to deny the crown for long-time leaders Bishopthorpe.

Top scorers of the week were Steve and Joanne Davis, who won 34 games against Wilberfoss fourths.
