David Lloyd 2 comfortably took the points with a win at Sheriff Hutton to claim the Fulford Ladies Invitation Tennis League division five title.

Their 13th win from 14 matches came after third couple Sharon Davidson and Jenny Walker top-scored with 28 games, although all three couples contributed well to the winning score of 74-34.

Runners-up Knaresborough 2 also recorded a win but it was a much tighter. They edged past New Earswick 58-50, Paddy MacJannette and Natasha Quigley’s 24 games proving influential.

In the bottom of the table clash, Cawood recorded a 61-47 win over Bubwith after Lorraine Bishop and Ruby Anderson led from the front with 25 games.

The win keeps Cawood’s survival hopes alive, but Bubwith’s defeat confirms their relegation from division five.

Boston Spa 1 secured promotion from division two after beating Wigginton 1 64-44. Lorraine Pearey, has only missed one match in the campaign and she re-formed her successful partnership with Lesley Bowling to rack up 25 games. The loss consigned Wigginton 1 to division three next year.

Elsewhere, winners Pocklington 1 retained their 100 per cent record with a win over Dunnington 2 which ended Dunnington’s promotion hopes.

Fulford 2 and Knaresborough 1 battled out a draw in the closest match of the week. Lisa Garland and Nicky Browne and Louise Morgan Williams and Janice McMillan top scored for Fulford and Knaresborough respectively.

Bishopthorpe 3 currently head division six after they beat Wilberfoss but Stamford Bridge only need a draw in their rearranged match against Appleton Roebuck 2 to sneak the title.

Emma Doughty and Kim Lees were the star performers with 26 games for Stamford as they beat Dunnington 4 59-49.

Appleton Roebuck’s Julia Campbell and Pauline Connolly led them to a 80-28 win over Poppleton 3 with 31 games.

Division four promotion contenders Cliffe and Sutton-on-Derwent had easy wins with Sutton’s top scorers on 31 being Anna Fell and Lucy Collier.

Fulford 3 secured their division four billing with a crushing win over relegated Heworth, captain Carolyn Taylor and Janette Richardson also notching up 31 games.

Hettie Alton made her first appearance of the summer for Castlegarth 1 in the biggest win of the week over Bishopthorpe 1. She and partner Dawn Steele took 34 games to outscore regulars Sue Perkins and Helen Robinson by one game. The 96-12 win takes Castlegarth back to the division one runners-up position after Dunnington 1 slipped up against York 2.


Bean and do it appeal

The Beryl Bean Over-55s tournament will be held at Poppleton on Sunday, September 29, at 10am.
