Poppleton have been crowned division one champions in the IT Sports Mixed Tennis League.

Poppleton sealed the title after beating York, the only team who could have denied them the championship.

They are the fourth different team to lift the silverware in the last four years.

Nick Turnbull and Claire Smith top-scored again for Poppleton and have yet to drop a set this season with only one match to go.

The relegation battle is still wide open after Wigginton maintained their divisional status with a win against York 2 and Dunnington took the points against Fulford 1.

Ellis Ward and Angela Crossley won 33 games for Wetherby Castlegarth against Fulford 2 as they fight to avoid following York 2 through the trap door.

The match between the two sides tonight could be the decider.

David Lloyd have captured the division two title after a win at Bishopthorpe, achieving the remarkable feat of promotion every year since they joined the league in division 11.

Andy Holmes and Frances Mutter ended the season on a high for David Lloyd, unbeaten against Bishopthorpe and York.

The second promotion place is still between four teams after York bounced back with a win against Bubwith.

With one week of the scheduled season to go, division four is still wide open.

Heworth have been promoted but second-placed Cliffe beat York, led by Ian Crowther and Jane Pemberton, while third-placed Wilberfoss won by two games at Riccall. Both defeated sides are under threat of relegation.

In division five, second-placed Wigginton met third-placed Bishopthorpe with Wigginton guaranteed promotion if they won.

However, Bish’s solid team performance sealed victory.

Sutton-on-Derwent 2 have captured the division six title.

Nigel Britland and Nicki Husband led the side to a win against Stillington and then sealed the title with a close victory over their thirds.

Poppleton are favourites to join Sutton after beating Stillington. They need one more point from their final match against Sutton 3, who are in the relegation battle.

Wilberfoss ended Dunnington’s promotion hopes with a close win and a triumph at Tollerton means they must wait for Poppleton’s result this week to see if they have done enough.

Stamford Bridge have won the division seven title with a win against New Earswick, despite the unbeaten efforts of James Chambers and Lisa Debenham.

They claim the title as one of the six unbeaten teams this season.

Rufforth are still top of division eight after top-scorers Charlie Dixon and Kate Lewis led them to victory against relegated Appleton Roebuck.

Stamford Bridge are still second but were pushed all the way by Riccall.

Fulford are still fighting against relegation and won valuable points against Appleton Roebuck.

In division nine, Cliffe beat Fulford to move above David Lloyd 3 at the summit.

Division ten is proving intriguing with Bishopthorpe in pole position after Barry Johnson and Helen Williams led them to victory over Rufforth.

Tim and Alex Sherwood won 28 games for Sutton-on-Derwent as they earned their first point against Rufforth.
