York I have been crowned champions of division one of the Fulford Ladies Invitation Tennis League after a brace of wins mean they cannot be overtaken.

First they saw off Fulford I, who were only able to field four players – virtually ensuring an end to their time in the top-flight – before beating Bishopthorpe I in a rearranged fixture.

Bish’s defeat means they are definitely playing second division tennis next year after they were also comprehensively beaten by Dunnington I, Nicola Loten and Karen Mitchell teaming up to take 31 games.

David Lloyd I took advantage of a depleted Poppleton I side to win 60-48, with 25 games for Debbie Holman and Helen Larkin giving them a vital two points and moving them clear of the relegation spots.

Pocklington I beat nearest rivals Boston Spa I 72-36 to give them the division two title and a swift return to the top tier.

It was a good all round performance for Pocklington with top scorers captain Liz Jones and Helen Whilesmith with 26 games. Lorraine Pearey and Lesley Bowley fought hard with 23 games for Boston Spa.

Knaresborough I’s revival continues as another two victories moved them up to fourth place after they were languishing at the bottom of the table a few weeks ago.

First, they overcame Fulford II 57-51 before Francesca Bakes and Alex Sijpesteijn took 31 games in their 74-34 win over Copmanthorpe.

Cop’s defeat dipped them to the bottom after nearest rivals Wigginton I notched up a vital win over Castlegarth II.

Fulford II endured a tough weekend after Dunnington II beat them 55-53 for the second time this season.

Pocklington have cause for a double celebration as the second team’s latest win ensured they are promoted to division two next year.

Angela Bush and Andrea Bland led from the front in a 62-46 victory at the expense of Wistow. Starbeck are still in line for the second promotion spot following their easy win over Boston Spa II.

Rowntree Park edged past Poppleton II 55-53 and Appleton Roebuck drew with Riccall. They and Popp remains favourites for the drop but all is still to play for.

Top teams Rufforth and Cliffe went head to head in division four with Rufforth coming out on top in a close battle 59-49.

However, both teams look odds-on for promotion after third-placed team Sutton-on-Derwent were forced to concede 36 games to Fulford III which resulted in a 74-34 defeat.

The other key fixture was at the bottom end of the table where Bishopthorpe II took the points against fellow relegation contenders Copmanthorpe II with a 57-51 win.

Both promotion spots are now decided in division five with Knaresborough II joining David Lloyd II in division four next year although the title is still up for grabs.

Knaresborough beat Bubwith 58-50 but David Lloyd II remain at the top of the table as Liz Taylor and Jenny Walker racked up 30 games in their win over New Earswick.

Lorna Pope and Lorraine Bishop guided Cawood to a good win over third placed Dunnington III as they were finally able to field a full-strength team. They however remain in contention for relegation with three other clubs.

Sheriff Hutton helped their cause after they beat fellow strugglers Copmanthorpe III 62-46 thanks to 33 games from Pauline Hull and Andrea Pitman.

Division six is still wide open but Wilberfoss recorded the highest individual score of the week as Gerry Screeton and Andrea Webster put in an incredible performance to drop just one game.

Bishopthorpe III still lead despite going down to Appleton Roebuck II 56-52, but chasing hard are Stamford Bridge who beat Wigginton II by the same score.

At the other end of the table Margaret Jenkins and Sue Lister took 25 games for Dunnington IV as they moved off the bottom by beating David Lloyd III.
