DIVISION one leaders Poppleton suffered their first defeat of the Tyke Petroleum Men’s Tennis League season, pipped by David Lloyd.

Paul Turnbull and John Anderson were unbowed for Poppleton with three 6-6 rubbers, while Jan Dyl and Ben Orton delivered for David Lloyd with 2½ points from 25 games won in a 60-48 win.

Rowntree Park welcomed back Sam Davies and he partnered James Denmark to 3-28 at Fulford to help his side pinch top spot after plundering 76 games and ten points from their hosts.

Pocklington entertained two Wigginton teams and their guests went home with 23 points between them. In division one, Wigginton 1 only dropped one point in their 74-34 romp, while James Benson enjoyed a tremendous debut for Wigginton 3, partnering Adam Houghton to 3-28 against Pocklington 2 in division six.

Copmanthorpe made it six wins out of six as as they breezed past Sutton to stay top of division two. Dave Atkinson and Jack Wood were again imperious with 3-28. Poppleton 2 took five stand-ins to Stamford Bridge and conceded 11 points and 80 games. Bishopthorpe’s Rob Williams and Jonny Kay nailed 3-25 at York 2 only for their team-mates to draw a blank in a 9-3 reverse.

York 1 captain Pete Goodall swapped his pairings in an 11-1 (76-32) victory at Rowntree Park 2, keeping them clear at the top of division three. Wigginton hosted two Boston Spa sides with mixed results.

In division three, Chris Burnham and Kevin Fairclough took 3-24 against Boston Spa 1 as Wigginton 2 notched their second win of the season.

At Strensall, Wigginton 4 went down 10½-1½ to Boston Spa 3 in division eight.

Chris James and Ivan Dechovsky were top-scorers this week, winning each of their three rubbers 11-1 for division four leaders Harlow at home to Poppleton 3. York 3 snatched second with a surprise 10½-1½ win at home to promotion hopefuls Rufforth.

Lindsay McLeod and Rob Abbot scored 2½ of their team’s three points as Sutton-on-Derwent 2 beat Copmanthorpe 2 by 9-3. Division five favourites Fulford 2 fell to rampant Riccall, who were unbeaten for 11 points. Heworth crashed at David Lloyd 2, whose Nick Pears and Trevor Watson scored a huge 3-31.
