YORK City Rowing Club’s Adam Janes can lay down a marker for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio by starring for Great Britain at this week’s World Under-23 Championships in Lithuania.

The 18-year-old St Peter’s School pupil is rowing in the eights crew as part of a 44-strong GB squad for the championships in Trakai which start tomorrow and run until Sunday.

The competition will feature more than 800 rowers from 56 countries and give Britain’s next generation valuable international experience as part of GB Rowing’s Road To Rio programme.

Team manager Steve Gunn said: “It is a promising young team and the joy of the U23s is we don’t really know what will happen until racing starts.”

The heats for the eights will be held on Thursday, with the repechage on Friday and the final of the concluding race of the regatta on Sunday.
