YORK City Rowing Club are celebrating a first at the Women’s Eights’ Head of the River race in London. The River Ouse-based club sent two crews to the race, which is rowed on seven kilometres of the Thames between Chiswick Bridge and Putney Bridge.
York’s ‘A’ crew came 43rd overall against tough opposition, but won the Provincial Club Pennant for the first time. The Pennant is awarded to the fastest eligible non-academic club not based in the London area. The crew, of Dominique Stork (cox), Mags Felter, Lizzie Higgins, Loretta Williams, Helena Mullineaux, Amelia Sankey, Naomi Coe, Alex Evans and Ali Stevens, also came sixth out of 42 boats in the Intermediate 2 category.
The ‘B’ boat finished 128th and came 32nd out of 132 Intermediate 3 entrants. The crew was Edward Henshaw (cox), Rachel Cubitt, Karen Williams, Jenny Foreman, Anna Heathcote, Jo Brehaut, Liz Porte, Lucy Stewart and Steph Hazel-Gant.
Both York crews were coached by Patrick Evans.
