Rower Adam Janes wins gold medal at Home International Regatta

ST PETER’S School rower Adam Janes brought home a gold medal from the Home International Regatta held in Cork, Ireland.

His prized haul followed his selection to row for England in the Under-18 eight two weeks ago.

After five days at the gruelling Great Britain final trials in Nottingham, Janes was selected to row in the eight.

This was followed by two further weeks of hard training with his crew.

Raced over the 2,000 metres international course in Cork, the England eight planned to try to get out in front early on to gain the psychological advantage over their opponents.

They had a good, strong start and took a lead from the first stroke. They then kept a high rating at 38 strokes per minute until 250 metres had elapsed.

After that they settled into a good strong rhythm and by 500m had established a lead.

From here they had the advantage of being able to see their opposition and could counteract any moves they made.

For the last 1,000m the crew had a “step-up“ every minute, widening their winning margin and coming in seven seconds ahead of the field in a very fast time of time of six minutes and two seconds.

For Janes this was a worthy reward for the culmination of a year’s very hard training.

Still aged only 16, he is able to represent his country for another two years.
