THE University of York Rowing Club men’s eight crew dominated the Yorkshire Head on the River Ouse.

The students were the fastest boat of the day at the White Rose county’s premier head race, which attracted a field of 212 crews.

The Yorkshire Head, organised by the Yorkshire Rowing Council, is rowed over a 5,100-metre course between Rawcliffe Landing, near Nether Poppleton, and Lendal Bridge.

The University of York eight clocked 16 minutes 30 seconds – 26 seconds faster than any other crew.

A total of six York City Rowing Club boats finished in the top 15, with the host club’s eight finishing second.

The fastest women’s crew was a coxless quad from Tyne United.

Andrew Cawood, Yorkshire Rowing Council’s chairman, said: “This year’s Yorkshire Head produced some great racing, with the University of York men’s eight being the stand-out crew.

“Thank you to everyone who competed and supported the event.

“The 5,100-metre course tested the stamina of crews and the skills of the coxswain to navigate the fastest route down the river.

“A total of 212 crews entered from all over the country, of all ages and abilities in boats ranging from the fast eights and quads through to the slower single sculls and pairs.”

Cawood also paid tribute to the volunteers involved in the running of the event, plus the support of York City Rowing Club.
