HAXBY I proved first yet again as they won the Martyn Kennedy Memorial Netball Fundraising Tournament, which raises cash for the York Hospital intensive care unit.

But it was the nominated charity, which was also a victor as £400 was raised for the unit by the event, which is organised by Joyce Rollinson and Martyn's mum Val Kennedy who are both members of the York and District Netball League.

The event, which was held at Joseph Rowntree School, has raised more than £11,000 since its inception in 1994 after Martyn died in the ICU in 1993. All monies realised by entry fees, raffle, tombola and cake stalls goes towards equipment desperately needed by the unit.

The 14 teams, who entered the event were split into two sections, those from the higher divisions in the League and those from the lower, which included Tadcaster, a brand new entry to the League.

The trophy was won for the third successive year by Haxby 1, who beat Harrogate squad Hi-Lites 12-6. Haxby 2 were a close third followed by Rufforth 1, Rawcliffe 1, RI 3 and Rawcliffe 2.

The ICU cup, donated by Val Kennedy three years ago for the lower division clubs, was won by Barlby who beat Rawcliffe 3 12-8. Steve Robinson, from York Hospital, brought a couple of pieces of equipment to show the teams before presenting the trophies to Emma Caywood and Carol Eccles, captains of Haxby 1 and Barlby respectively.
