HAXBY I have lifted the Martyn Kennedy Netball Trophy for the fourth year in a row.

Haxby I beat Hi Lites, of Harrogate, 15-11 having led 7-3 at half-time in a repeat of last year's final.

The 15-team annual event was held at Joseph Rowntree School, New Earswick, in memory of former pupil Martyn Kennedy, who died in 1993.

A total of 14 teams from the York area were joined by regular visitors Hi Lites to battle for the trophy.

The team competed in two groups. Group one included Haxby I, Haxby II, Hi Lites, Phoenix, Osbaldwick, Elvington I and Rufforth A', with Haxby III, Haxby IV, RI Mixtures, York AA, Selby, British Sugar, Elvington II and Rufforth II in group two.

The semi-finals saw Haxby I beat their club mates Haxby III 12-1, while Hi-Lites beat Haxby IV 15-11.

A second trophy was on offer for teams who enter this competition but who do not have a division one player in their team.

The play-off for the trophy involved the two teams with the third and fourth highest scores in group two, RI and Rufforth II.

At the halfway stage, Rufforth were edging ahead and, with RI losing a player through injury, they took the cup with an 8-4 victory.

All proceeds from the day, which came to £510, will be given to the intensive care unit at York Hospital.
