York hockey ace Shirley Barrow dies

SHIRLEY BARROW, a former York school teacher and a prolific goal scorer for York Women’s Hockey Club, has died after a long battle against cancer. She was 80.

Barrow taught physical education and maths at Joseph Rowntree School in New Earswick from 1952 to 1983, when she retired.

She played centre forward for York Women’s Hockey Club and racked up about 200 goals in her career.

A funeral service will be held at York Crematorium on Thursday, May 10, at 1.40pm.
