Hockey: Double victory seals division one promotion place for York ladies
10:24am Tuesday 27th March 2012 in Hockey
BACK-TO-BACK weekend wins secured promotion for City of York ladies I in division one of the North Hockey League.
York beat hosts Crewe Vagrants I 3-0 on Saturday and then won 3-0 at Morpeth on Sunday to move one point ahead of third-placed Wakefield II, who have completed their fixtures.
Against Crewe, York started well as Laura Horne scored on a rebound off the ’keeper.
Crewe caused problems but some good defensive work kept York ahead, allowing them to attack on the break.
York won a host of short corners but failed to convert.
Sarah Holmes broke the deadlock to score York’s second goal from open play.
York then pounced again when Sam Binns scored a short corner straight strike, earning City the score they deserved.
The following day, City made a slow start as they felt the effects of the previous day and they knew they would have to make the most of their chances.
York ’keeper Dawn Hopkins made an impressive diving save to her bottom left, and her team-mates made the breakthrough.
Binns found Ali Butler on the post and she deflected home for a 1-0 half-time lead.
York’s second goal came from another short corner when Loz Pearey took the initiative to take the straight strike after an inaccurate push out and found the back of the net.
The third goal came when Horne’s shot was stopped on the line by a defender’s foot and Lauren Boddison stepped up to score a penalty flick.
Acomb I lost 3-1 against Harrogate IV, Hannah Yoward scoring the consolation goal.
