CITY of York Ladies I were denied the chance go top of North Hockey League division one as they drew 0-0 at leaders Wakefield II.
Victory would have seen City leapfrog second-placed Longridge I, who lost 2-0 to Lancaster I, and Wakefield.
However, the hosts thwarted City’s attacking threat in a tight game featuring the league’s two meanest defences.
The match was played at a high tempo and, after a period of Wakefield pressure, York found their rhythm to create some chances.
The best opening of the first half fell to York, with Ali Butler hitting the ball across the face of goal, but Laura Horne was unable to make contact.
In the second half, the York defence worked tirelessly to prevent Wakefield from gaining an advantage.
York closed the match on top, but they were denied by some crucial Wakefield tackles.
Third-placed York travel to Weetwood to take on fifth-placed University of Leeds Gryphons on Saturday (noon).
