NAP-HAPPY City of York Hockey Club men’s first team continued their unbeaten North League division one run with a gritty 5-2 success at Wakefield II.

Alex Cockram dribbled along the wing before cutting in from the left and smashing home into the far corner to break the deadlock.

Wakefield replied with a goal from a short corner, and after York keeper Jack Forward saved a penalty flick, the home side doubled their lead.

But York ran riot in the second half. Rich Jenkin coolly stepped around an oncoming defender to drill a powerful reverse-shot into the bottom corner.

After a lull in goals, Jenkin fired the visitors into the lead and then completed his hat-trick and man of the match display through another drag flick.

In the closing minutes, Ben Bull slapped a strong shot into the net.

City of York II were held to a 2-2 draw by Rotherham I, the hosts feeling as if two more Yorkshire League premier division points had been conceded.

Rotherham took the lead through a fine individual goal, which proved the only one of the first half.

York’s ceaseless attacks were foundering against great saves and stubborn defence before Mark Moisley levelled with a strike from a corner.

Minutes later York were deflated by a breakaway rush but they kept plugging away and five minutes from time Chris Dutton’s driving run yielded an equaliser.

City of York III ran out comfortable 3-0 winners at Sheffield Bankers V in division two.

It took 20 minutes to break the visitors’ resistance, Ben Foster pouncing on a rebound to score.

The Sheffield keeper proved a defiant barrier in the second half until he was deceived by Tim Lister’s strike-cum-pass.

With seven minutes left, Lister teed up Rob Prentice to finish calmly.

The man of the match was Alex Herriott, who shone with a tireless midfield display.

It took just seven minutes for City of York IV to rout Ben Rhydding with three goals through Greg Sykes (2) and James Fitton in a division three encounter.

Further goals before half-time came from Rob Unsworth and Sykes - his ninth York hat-trick to take his Yorkshire League career goals tally to 151.

There was just one goal in the second half and that came from Russ Bowry.

The first division four north win for City of York V was sealed at Halifax with a 5-0 win graced by first-half goals from Graham Cook and Tony Brimble and second-half strikes from Brimble, Andy Wilson and Keith Wilson.

In division five north, City of York VI romped home 5-2 against Ben Rhydding VI, capped by a dominant second-half display.

On target were Ollie Sanderson, Andy Potts, George Trowsdale and two from Sam Blackburn, his first a brilliant screamer after dizzying footwork.

In the same division, City of York VII failed to capitalise on a storming first-half show at Leeds Adel who fell to a goal either side of half-time.

Despite a first-half equaliser from Alex Triffit, City of York VIII were unable to hold on to hosts Harrogate VI, whose powerful second-half performance resulted in an emphatic 7-1 win in division six north.
