CITY of York men’s I remain top of North Hockey League division one despite having to settle for a point from a trip to Neston South Wirral.

The visitors opened the scoring when some cool passing from Stephen Paterson and Alex Cockram resulted in a disguised pass to Chris Wilson, who sent a flick fizzing past the keeper’s right arm.

Neston forced a series of short corners and finally converted one to level.

York regained the lead when Alex Cockram turned from provider to scorer with a strong flick into the goal after dribbling past five opponents.

Just as York were in sight of three points, Neston were again awarded a succession of short corners and were able to slide a ball underneath debutant keeper Jack Forward to equalise.

Both keepers then pulled off several startling saves to ensure parity.

Juniors Sam Engleman and Matt Horn impressed.

City of York II claimed their first point in the Yorkshire League premier division with a 1-1 draw at home to Sheffield University Bankers III.

Chances were few and far between in the opening 15 minutes until the visitors took the lead from a penalty corner.

City responded well with Peter Perryman and Matt Tipper snuffing out Bankers in midfield, allowing Freddie Heijbroek and Richard Chandler to attack and levelled through Pat Herriott.

After the break, City had some excellent early chances with Chris Dutton’s powerful strike crashing off a post.

Returning skipper and goalkeeper Jonathan Doyle was alert to the Bankers’ threat at the other end.

It was honours even at 1-1 for City of York III in division two against Doncaster III.

York had a number of early chances with Tim Lister coming the closest, while the hosts’ defence of Joe Moisley, Dave Rogers, Sam Baker and Hugh Richards held firm.

However, Doncaster seized on an advantage to slot the ball past keeper Ignjatovic.

Within two minutes of the second half starting, York responded smartly. A pitch-long aerial ball from man of the match Dave Rogers saw Lister round the keeper and unselfishly pass to Matt Todd who equalised.

The rest of the game was very much a midfield battle with neither keeper tested.

Table-topping City of York IV enjoyed a win double in division three, beating Leeds VI 5-1 on Saturday before a 4-1 win over Leeds University II the next day.

York took an early lead against Leeds through James Fitton before Henry Wilson struck soon after.

Second-half goals from Greg Sykes, Robert Kendrew and Luke Knight sealed the win, with Leeds getting a late consolation.

Against Leeds University, York went ahead after 15 minutes through Rob Unsworth before being pegged back.

But in the second half, York hit three unanswered strikes from Sykes and James Walker followed by a spectacular second by Unsworth.

City of York VII turned in some of their best hockey so far but crashed 8-0 to division five north table-toppers Wakefield V.

After two postponed matches, City of York VIII finally got their division six north season under way but they went down 5-2 at Airedale III.

The home team capitalised on poor defending to race into a 3-0 lead in the first 20 minutes.

James Crellin pulled a goal back for York just before half-time and Alex Triffit got a second immediately after the restart.

As York pushed for an equaliser, gaps at the back let Airedale in for two further goals.
