Spa ranks put a halt to Acomb ACOMB Hockey Club men’s first team’s maximum start to Yorkshire League division four north ended in a 2-1 defeat at home to Boston Spa II.

The visitors took the lead from a penalty corner midway through the first half and doubled their advantage with minutes to go when following a long corner, a neat deflection took the ball past keeper Craig Brown.

With no usual lead forward Acomb found it hard work to get into the visitors D, but Nick Linfoot occasionally had some lone forays on the right.

Home spirits were raised when Matt Dickenson drove into the area and his rocket shot left the visiting keeper with no chance 15 minutes from the end.

But despite attempts to push for the equaliser the Tangerines were caught outnumbered in defence.

The Tangerines’ men’s second ranks crashed 3-0 to hosts City of York VI in division five north.

They conceded two early goals and were left with too big a task to scale when conceding a third strike late in the first half.

In the second half, Acomb had some good chances, with skipper Jonny Brown and Harry Ellis going close.

Acomb ladies also lost 3-0 to Pudsey in Yorkshire League division two.
