CITY of York ladies I built on their opening day draw with a 2-1 victory over Chester I in the North Hockey League premier division.

Chester scored the first goal within the first ten minutes, but York refused to let their heads drop and forced two quick short corners.

Captain Laura Horne then found Rebecca Birch free in the circle and she took an early shot, which the Chester goalkeeper deflected into her pads allowing Katie Birch to steer the ball over the line.

York were on top at the start of the second period but were unable to make two short corners count.

Skilful dribbling by Lorna Harris took her to the top of the circle, surrounded by Chester defenders.

Harris passed to fellow midfielder Steph Wilkinson and, free at the top of the ‘D’, she smashed the ball home.

York were reduced to ten players but Frankie Marsh and Lou Raper kept Chester at bay, while Sam Binns made a crucial interception.

City of York III beat visiting Pudsey I 4-0 in Yorkshire League division two, while City of York IV lost 6-3 at Barnsley I in division four.

In division seven north, City of York Ladies V, still integrating several new players, were beaten 3-0 by hosts Horsforth II.
