ACOMB Hockey Club opened the new Yorkshire League campaign with two wins from three matches.

The men's I side were 3-2 winners over City of York V in division four and Acomb ladies beat Garforth 2-1 in division two, while the men's second string lost 4-1 at Ben Rhydding V in division five north.

Acomb I opened the scoring against City of York in the tenth minute at Energise through Dave Richardson’s close range effort following a penalty corner routine.

York equalised 15 minutes later when Tony Brimble’s second shot from a penalty corner rebound was neatly struck under Craig Brown.

A sweeping move the length of the pitch saw Pete Hilton net from a narrow angle following Matt Dickenson’s neat deflection.

Man of the match Nick Linfoot was a constant threat to the visitors' defence in the second half, but York equalised for a second time again through a Brimble penalty corner.

Within minutes the Tangerines regained the lead thanks to Richardson's second from a well worked penalty corner.

Acomb held firm for the final five minutes, with Paul Kellett a rock in defence.

The seconds' only goalscorer was Dylan McChesney.

Acomb ladies led 1-0 at Garforth after an even first half as Hannah Yoward struck a post before Wendy Watson’s neat touch in the final minute flat footed the home keeper for the opener.

Garforth pressed hard but were thwarted by solid work by Sally Fairweather, Rachel Roberton and Paula Rudge.

Acomb played on the break through Kerry Woods and Yoward, often through some good work by newcomer Jen Oldroyd.

The home side equalised with five minutes to go after many penalty corners efforts went awry.

The Tangerines broke soon after and found youngster Annabeth Pycroft unmarked and she slotted the ball between the keeper and the near post for the winning goal.
