STRUGGLING City of York men’s I remain in the North Hockey League premier division drop zone after a 4-3 defeat at Brooklands MU II.

The Minster city side are still looking for their first win of the campaign and, after eight games, they are second from bottom, four points adrift of tenth-placed University of Durham II.

City of York broke the deadlock when Mike Carter executed a superb drag flick at a short corner.

Brooklands levelled from a short corner, with Luke Staveley unfortunate not to keep it out on the goal line.

Carter notched his second goal when the ball broke favourably near the Brooklands circle, running onto the ball and burying it past the oncoming goalkeeper.

The first half ended 2-2 as Brooklands fought back with a carbon copy of their opening goal.

Brooklands took the lead for the first time with a reverse stick shot and they added a fourth goal after a period of sustained pressure.

City worked hard to get back into the game and were rewarded when Maciek Wieczorek fired a vicious drag flick into the roof of the net.

City of York II missed a golden opportunity to bag three precious points in the Yorkshire League premier division.

The home side lost 2-1 against York University I, who beat them 6-3 the previous weekend.

Dan Tompkins and Chris Bolt went close for City before Peter Perryman’s effort was cleared off the line in a goalless first half.

The students took the lead but City responded when Jonny Kilmartin’s turn and shot beat the ’keeper.

City were then hit with a sucker punch ten minutes from time as a disputed free hit led to a penalty corner goal for York University.

In division two, City of York III were 2-0 winners at Huddersfield Dragons II.

York made a fast start and took an early lead when an aerial pass from Chris Dutton found Tim Lister, who accelerated towards the ‘D’, rounded the ’keeper and scored with a reverse shot.

Lister struck again on 20 minutes, robbing a Huddersfield defender of the ball and wrong- footing the ’keeper.

York ’keeper Brian Ignjatovic, the man of the match, saved a penalty flick to preserve the lead until half-time. Ben Foster and Mark Moisley were denied in a goalless second half.

Dominant City of York IV won 4-0 at Leeds Gryphons IV in division three.

Excellent first-half goals from Greg Sykes, Zack Moore and Will Broadbent put York firmly in charge, and Danny Vaughan added the fourth goal.

City of York V scored twice in each half as they beat Mirfield I 4-1 in division four north.

The City scorers were Tony Brimble, Peter Richardson, Matt Todd and Harry Heyes.

City of York VI paid for a poor first half as they lost 5-1 at Bradford University I in the same division.

The visitors held their own in the opening 20 minutes, but then Bradford raised their game and scored three quick goals past stand-in ’keeper Tim Ball.

York’s Andrew Brewster laid the ball off for Pat Birch to pull a goal back, but Bradford scored two more to lead 5-1 at the break.

City of York VII crashed 5-1 at home to Driffield II in division five north. Andy Wilson scored from a short corner for York.

City of York VIII picked up their first win of the division six north campaign, emerging 1-0 winners at home to Slazenger IV.

The away team had the better of the chances in the first half, but were unable to break through.

A tactical change at half-time led to the hosts dominating the second period. James Crellin battled hard up front and secured a penalty corner, clinically converted by Martin Gorton.

City of York Badgers continued where they left off in a second match against Bradford in a fortnight, this time clinching a 3-1 win.

York dominated the early exchanges and opened the scoring with a great finish from Ben Mould following some good work from Caitlan Rore.

George Good bossed the midfield battle and was involved as Mould extended the lead. Bradford pulled one back at the end of the first half, but York got a poacher’s goal from Jack Fletcher.
