Hockey: City of York lose 6-2 at Alderley Edge

Goalkeeper Jon Chappell was unlucky to bring down an Alderley attacker in the circle and the resulting penalty stroke was converted.

York started to control the game and were awarded a number of short corners, but could not convert the opportunities until Mike Carter tipped in the ball at the back post after a defence-slicing pass from Maciek Wieczorek.

The second half started off much the same with York applying pressure only to again squander chance after chance.

The hosts countered with two quick goals and, once the fourth went in, there was effectively no way back.

Wieczorek finished off a fine passing move when he deflected the ball over the Alderley ’keeper, but York succumbed twice more leaving them with an acute need to start converting chances.

City of York men’s II were made to pay for another inconsistent performance by a strong and physical Driffield side who won 5-1 in the Yorkshire League premier division.

The visitors took the lead when a penalty corner was placed perfectly. That gave the lift for Driffield to strike three more times in a 15-minute spell that yanked the game from York.

York put in a much better second-half display, led by man of the match Peter Perryman. And after Driffield grabbed a fifth goal, York responded ten minutes from time when Alex Fletcher converted a penalty corner.

A late goal rescued a point for City of York III in a 3-3 division two draw at home to Worskop I.

From the outset the hosts were sloppy in possession and, by half-time Worskop led 2-0, despite early saves from goalkeeper Brian Ignjatovic.

Again York sluggishly opened the second half and within two minutes were 3-0 down after a wayward pass was intercepted.

But York finally started to find some form, especially with injury reducing the visitors to ten men.

A short corner was calmly drilled in by Alex Herriott before a fluid passing move yielded a strike from Jonathan Kilmartin.

Relieved not to go down to ten men when Ben Foster was only given a green for throwing his stick to the side of the pitch in frustration, York levelled when Herriott’s free-hit struck the visiting ’keeper’s pads to spin over the line.

Despite a much-improved second half, City of York IV fell 3-1 at Sheffield University Bankers V in division three.

York started brightly and took the game to Sheffield, but the hosts led 2-0 at half-time.

It was late in the second half when Zach Moore squeezed home York’s goal, but by then Sheffield had already notched a third.

Second-half goals from Richardson and Todd sealed the division four north points for City of York V over hosts Harrogate III.

In the same division, three times City of York VI led visitors Harrogate IV, but each time they were pegged back.

Rob Able fired York ahead from a fine move involving Andrew Brewster, Henry Wilson and John Doran before Harrogate levelled just before half-time.

Pat Birch deflected in a Keith Wilson shot before parity was restored again and then Able’s successful penalty kick was cancelled out by a late leveller.

After last week’s 7-0 division five north drubbing, City of York VII hammered Huddersfield Dragons V 5-0.

It was the best team display of the season and the first clean sheet. On target were Richard Tanner-Smith (2), James Gibbon, Andy Wilson and an own goal, resulting from a terrific ball in from Andrew Gray.

City of York VIII secured a second consecutive 2-2 division six north draw, this time at home to Harrogate V.

Elliot Powell put the home side ahead but Harrogate hit back with two goals before Stefan Solanki got the equaliser.

York’s development Badgers side produced an excellent performance to clinch their second win of the season, 3-1 against Slazengers.

After Andrew Hyams broke the deadlock solid defending and saves from goalkeeper Ella Deighton kept out the visitors.

Just before half-time Hyams added a second after great work by Lauren Ellwood.

A superb move, starting with Sam Nicholson in defence, ended with Hyams completing his hat-trick before a Slazengers’ consolation.
