Acomb Hockey Club men’s firsts showed ample defiance to twice rally from a deficit to share the Yorkshire League division four north spoils against hosts City of York V.

The home side were initially thwarted by fine goalkeeping from Craig Brown before he was beaten by a penalty stroke from Glyn Brookes-Humphreys.

The Tangerines found it tough to maintain pressure on a solid home defence.

But Acomb levelled in kind when a push on Matt Dickenson led him to convert the resulting penalty stroke.

The second half followed the same pattern with Baz Whitfield and Dave Brown busy in defence before York went ahead again through Matt Todd.

However, Acomb rallied again, and Harry Ellis levelled from close range with seven minutes to go.

Two division five north defeats were suffered by Acomb II.

The first was 8-0 by visitors Driffield II, though the margin of victory did not accurately reflect the hosts’ neat play.

A day later, Acomb lost by the odd goal in five at University of York. Chris Tetley scored twice.

The Yorkshire League division two plunder was shared by Acomb ladies and their Selby visitors.

Selby took the lead in the third minute but the Tangerines replied almost instantly – Kerry Woods’s strike creeping under the visiting ’keeper.

With two minutes to the interval the visitors regained the lead.

Jane Elsworth kept the visitors at bay in the second half and, with Rachel Roberton and Georgi Wood working hard in midfield, the Tangerines stepped up their raids with Wendy Watson, Jenna Allinson and Vicky Wrigley linking well in attack.

A penalty-corner routine found Wood free to neatly slide the ball into the net from a tight angle for a 2-2 scoreline.
