Simon Dyson finishes Open Championship with a level-par 70

YORK golfer Simon Dyson rediscovered his trademark consistency on a dramatic final day in the Open Championship at Royal Lytham.

The 34-year-old closed the tournament with a level par round of 70 – one of the better rounds in testing conditions.

The Malton & Norton Golf Club ace carded pars at the opening nine holes of his fourth round before sensationally chipping in from off the tenth green for a birdie.

He resumed his par patrol for seven of the last eight holes, his only blemish being a five at the par four 15th.

That was enough to earn Dyson – who had rounds of 70, 67, 73 and 70 – a share of 23rd place, but there was drama at the top of the leaderboard.

South Africa’s Ernie Els claimed the second Open title of his career in remarkable fashion after Adam Scott squandered a four-shot lead with four holes to play.

The 42-year-old won on seven under par.
